The stage is set for Sunday's Gold Medal game at the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, with the Rollers to face an equally unbeaten Italian side for the ultimate prize in Ottawa.
Both teams arrive at the decider having navigated six games without a loss, setting up a genuine clash between two of the tournament's form sides.
ITALY'S ROAD TO THE FINAL
Italy opened their campaign in dominant fashion, defeating Brazil 77-32, before backing it up with a 63-56 win over the Netherlands. They continued their unbeaten run with a 66-59 victory over the USA, followed by a commanding 71-44 win against Argentina to close out an impressive group stage.
In the Quarter-Final, Italy were made to work harder than in previous rounds, but still found a way through, defeating Poland 75-68. They carried that momentum into the Semi-Final, overcoming Great Britain 63-59 in a tightly contested affair to book their spot in Sunday's decider.
Across the tournament, Italy have shown they're capable of both blowout victories and grinding out results in tighter contests, a similar trait to the one that has defined Australia's own campaign, particularly in their overtime win over Germany in the Semi-Final.
A FAMILIAR RIVALRY
Sunday's Gold Medal game will add another chapter to a rivalry with history on both sides. The two nations have split their two most recent meetings, with Australia claiming a 61-51 win in June 2023, before Italy responded with a 68-58 victory just a month later in July 2023. With scores that close in both previous meetings, Sunday's Final looks set to be another tightly fought contest.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
For the Rollers, victory would secure a third IWBF World Championship title, adding to previous triumphs in 2010 and 2014. The campaign has been headlined by a sensational individual tournament from Jaylen Brown, who has been the driving force behind Australia's unbeaten run, ably supported by the experience of Tristan Knowles and the playmaking of Tom O'Neill-Thorne.
Italy will be equally determined to claim gold, having navigated their own unbeaten path through the tournament with balanced performances across the board.
With both sides unbeaten and split across their two most recent head-to-head meetings, Sunday's Gold Medal game promises to be a fitting finale to the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.
