The Australian Opals are starting to find their rhythm.
A sluggish start to the tournament was firmly rectified in a rock solid 87 – 71 win over Turkiye. The win secures the Opals place in the knockout stages of the tournament atop of Group C.
Newly minted captain Ezi Magbegor starred and demonstrated why she’s one of the most dynamic and dominant players in the game. Magbegor finished with 21 points at +17.
Steph Talbot continued her form in scoring with 17 points but also as a defensive weapon. Australia has started touting her FIBA Talbot for good reason.
It was the first game of the tournament on Berlin Arena for the Opals and the game instantly had a different look to Puerto Rico.
Australia had a much higher rate and percentage of their looks. With Alanna Smith rested again due to lower leg soreness, STalbot and Magbegor dutifully stepped into the gap in scoring.
The Aussies took a six-point lead into the first break.
A lot like the game against Puerto Rico, Turkike continued to push the Opals and did damage from long range throughout the middle quarters.
In response, a fast and furious response came and Australia put on the burners.
The Opals extended a lead and it was hammered home by a dangerous array of depth.
There were some awesome minutes by Ally Wilson and Steph Reid. Miela Sowah dropped a signature bucket and we saw glimpses of Asia Cup MVP Alex Fowler start to emerge.
The Opals will finish their group stage matchups against Belgium on Monday.
