Ability Hoops programs are emerging across Australia as a fun and inclusive format for children to access the great game of basketball.
Recently, we acknowledged the work of Diamond Valley Basketball located in Greensborough, Victoria and young hooper Jamie Murphy who has been thriving in the environment. Jamie’s story is a great example of what Ability Hoops can provide: an opportunity for participants to build skills, develop confidence, enjoy being active and, most importantly, have fun playing basketball in an environment where they can feel comfortable and supported.
The Ability Hoops program has taken off at Diamond Valley, providing kids with a relaxed, inclusive and supportive environment to experience basketball.
Programs, Camps and Inclusions Manager Tanya Thomas from Diamond Valley believes Ability Hoops' introduction has been a game-changer.
“Diamond Valley started Ability Hoops in Term 2, 2026,” Thomas said.
“Ability Hoops is one of my favourite programs to run at association level because we believe it’s so important that there are basketball opportunities for everyone.”
Diamond Valley has been central to the delivery of modified sessions which include visual resources, social stories and access to a sensory space when participants need a break. Thomas believes the program goes beyond playing basketball.,
“It’s about much more than learning basketball skills,” Thomas explained.
“We’re seeing participants build confidence, develop social connections and experience success in their own way, while feeling like they genuinely belong within our basketball community.”
We use visual supports, positive language and individual feedback, and adapt activities to suit our participants, so every child has the opportunity to be involved, develop their skills and feel successful and valued.
Ability Hoops continues to expand with 13 centres and 43 programs delivered nationally in 2025. Thomas and Diamond Creek are already seeing the benefit to the community.
One of the nicest pieces of feedback we received was that Ability Hoops creates an environment where every child feels “successful and valued”,” Thomas said.
“We’ve also had families recommending Ability Hoops to other families within their schools and local communities. Seeing participants return each term, become more engaged and simply enjoy being part of basketball is exactly what we want the program to achieve.”
