The Australian Sapphires came within two points of a major upset, pushing tournament favourites USA all the way before falling 74-72 in a thrilling contest.
Australia set the tone early, taking a 23-22 lead into the first break and showing they were more than capable of matching the USA’s firepower. The Americans gradually wrestled back control throughout the second and third quarters, building their advantage to nine heading into the final term.
Yet, the Sapphires refused to go away. Mounting a spirited fourth quarter comeback to set up a tense finish, led by Isabel Smith, Olivia Olechnowicz and a lion-hearted showing from Sophie Richardson who nailed two three pointers late in the piece.
Australia continued to apply pressure till the final buzzer, rapidly cutting down the USA advantage to end a thrilling group stage matchup between two of the tournament heavyweights.
Smith finished with a game high 20 points on 67% shooting from beyond the arc, whilst Olechnowicz added 15 points, five rebounds and two steals in an outstanding performance. Madison Ryan also made her presence felt with a near double-double contributing nine points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the narrow defeat, Australia produced an impressive performance, taking the USA to the wire and further showcasing the resilience and belief within the Sapphires group.
