Sapphires surge past Latvia to start U17 World Cup

Australia’s second half revival starts the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup with a win.

AUS 76-65 LAT

The Sapphires secure a hard fought victory over Latvia, overcoming a competitive opening half before taking control after the main break.

The first quarter was tightly contested, with Australia holding a narrow 19-17 advantage at the first change.

Finding rhythm in the second, Olivia Olechnowicz sparked a run with a steal and layup to create some separation. The Sapphires stretched the margin to double digits, but Latvia responded late in the half to keep the game within reach at 40-35.

Madison Ryan led the way early, scoring 12 points on 5/7 shooting in the first half, before Australia came out firing in the third. A strong defensive effort fueled an 8-0 run to start the third as the Sapphires built a steady advantage into the final term.

Remaining composed down the stretch, Ryan and Richardson each added 14 points, while Olechnowicz scored and Sherrington 12. Matilda Trout delivered an all-round performance with nine points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Sapphires now turn their attention to the next challenge against the USA.
