THE HISTORY
The origins of the U16 National Championships starts in 1955, starting with a men’s competition. The first ever summit was won by New South Wales with the tournament hosted in Melbourne. The tournament expanded with a women’s division in 1971 with South Australia winning the inaugural championship in Adelaide.
Victoria Metro have had a stranglehold on the U16 title over the 71-year history of the championship. Victoria Metro have lifted the Shield 33 times. The next best is South Australia with seven, New South Wales with six.
Similarly, Victoria Metro are out by a mile with 27 titles in the women. Combined SA teams have won nine, Victoria Country and Queensland South have three apiece.
