Coaching shift for Centre of Excellence men’s program

Robbie McKinlay will depart as Head Coach of the Centre of Excellence men after a combined eight years across CoE and NBA Global programs

Basketball Australia is announcing that Robbie McKinlay will depart as Head Coach of the Centre of Excellence men after a combined eight years across CoE and NBA Global programs.

McKinlay arrived in Canberra in 2017 as an assistant coach with the NBA Global Academy and established himself as one of Australia's leading developers of elite young talent.

He was appointed Head Coach of the CoE Men's Program in 2021 and led the development of more than 80 athletes during his tenure.

McKinlay played a key role in developing some of Australia's brightest basketball talent, including Alex Condon, Johnny Furphy, Alex Toohey and Jacob Furphy.

New opportunities await McKinlay, who reflected on the next step in his already distinguished coaching career.

“I would like to thank BA for the opportunity to be part of two outstanding programs during my time in Canberra,” said McKinlay.

“I greatly appreciated the support staff and coaches who helped create a positive daily training environment,”

“To all the athletes I was able to coach thank you for your trust and hard work.”

Basketball Australia General Manager of Performance Pathways Peter Lonergan acknowledged McKinlay's contribution to the program.

“Robbie has been integral in the development of a number of current and future Boomers and leaves a legacy of elite player development from his time with the program,” said Lonergan.

“He has had a profound impact on the next generation of young Australian stars and we appreciate his work and commitment to the program during his eight years in Canberra.”

Information regarding McKinlay’s successor will be announced shortly. Assistant Coach, Braden Cotter will assume additional responsibilities on Robbie’s departure.
