Gangurrus win silver at World Cup

The Gangurrus are in Warsaw, Poland for the FIBA 3x3 World Cup.

The Gangurrus have secured Australia's best-ever result at a FIBA 3x3 World Cup, claiming silver after a thrilling 21-20 battle with the United States in the gold medal game.

Marena Whittle led the charge with a game-high 11 points as the Australians pushed one of the world's strongest teams to the limit in a contest that went right down to the wire.

The historic silver-medal finish caps a remarkable tournament for the Gangurrus, who also knocked off reigning champions the Netherlands in the semi-finals.

Day 7:

A gritty 16-14 semi-final victory over reigning champions the Netherlands will send the Gangurrus into the gold medal game.

Amy Atwell starred offensively with a game-high eight points, knocking down three two-pointers, while Hannah Hank and Marena Whittle chipped in with four points each as Australia held its nerve in a tight contest. Emma Clarke led the way on the boards with five rebounds, while Hank and Whittle added four apiece.

They are set to take on powerhouse USA for gold at 4:45am AEST 8 June.

DAY 6:

The Gangurrus are through to the semi-finals of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup after storming through with a 21-10 victory over Ukraine.

Marena Whittle led the way with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Amy Atwell added six points and Emma Clarke contributed five.

The Gangurrus completely controlled the rebounding battle, finishing with 22 rebounds to Ukraine's three, and will now face reigning world champions the Netherlands on 8 June at 1:00am AEST for a place in the gold medal game.

DAY 5:

A quarter-final berth is secured, and the Gangurrus are still dancing in Warsaw after dominating China 21-11. 

With a place in the knockout rounds on the line, the Gangurrus wasted little time taking control. Amy Atwell found her rhythm early and finished with a game-high nine points, while Marena Whittle added six points and Hannah Hank contributed four points and five rebounds.

They will face Ukraine in the quarterfinals on 7 June at 1:25am AEST.

DAY 4:

The Gangurrus (Women) team have secured their place in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup play-in round after splitting their final two Pool B games in Warsaw.

Australia suffered a narrow 20-18 defeat to Spain in its opening game of the day despite a strong performance from Marena Whittle, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Amy Atwell added seven points, while Emma Clarke pulled down six rebounds as the Gangurrus pushed one of the tournament favourites all the way before falling just short.

The Gangurrus responded against Hungary, claiming a 21-18 victory to finish pool play with a 3-1 record. Atwell led the scoring with eight points, while Whittle and Hannah Hank added six points apiece. Hank also dominated on the glass with seven rebounds as Australia secured the result needed to advance to the play-in stage.

The win sets up a do-or-die play-in clash with China on 6 June at 2:25am AEST, with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.

DAY 3:

The Gangurrus (Men's) FIBA 3x3 World Cup campaign has come to an end in Warsaw, with defeats to Madagascar and Serbia on day three confirming their elimination from the tournament.

Australia fell 22-17 to Madagascar in a must-win clash to open the day despite seven points from Jonah Antonio. The Gangurrus remained within striking distance throughout the contest, with Jarred Bairstow contributing four points and Lachlan Barker and Alex Higgins-Titsha adding three points apiece, but Madagascar pulled away late to secure the victory.

The Gangurrus were unable to keep their hopes alive in their final Pool A outing, going down 20-16 to Serbia. Higgins-Titsha led the way with seven points and four rebounds, while Antonio added five points. Bairstow battled hard on the glass with four rebounds and Barker contributed two points, but Serbia proved too strong in the closing stages.

DAY 2:

The Gangurrus (Women) sit at 1-1 after the opening day of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Warsaw, opening their campaign with a win over Mongolia before a narrow loss to the United States.

A strong opener saw the Aussies defeat Mongolia 21-15 behind a standout performance from Hannah Hank. Hank finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Amy Atwell added seven points, including three shots from the perimeter in true Atwell fashion. 

In Game 2 against USA, they matched the Americans for much of the contest, with Atwell leading the scoring with nine points and Marena Whittle adding four. Emma Clarke also made her presence felt with three points and two blocks, but the USA held on to claim a 21-18 win.

They will return to action overnight on Thursday AEST, facing Spain at 1:05am before taking on Hungary at 2:55am.

DAY 1:

The Gangurrus (Men) have opened their FIBA 3x3 World Cup campaign with a pair of losses in Warsaw, falling 21-12 to Spain before going down 21-14 to Austria overnight.

The men battled hard in their tournament opener against Spain, with Jarred Bairstow leading the way on the glass with four boards, while Lachlan Barker top-scored with four points. Jonah Antonio and Bairstow added three points apiece.

In their second outing against Austria, Antonio leading the scoring with seven points and dominated the perimeter with three two-pointers. Barker and Alex Higgins-Titsha added three points each.

They will now turn their attention to their must-win clashes against Madagascar and Serbia as they look to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
