Winning start for the Opals in Istanbul

The Opals secured their first win of the World Cup Qualifying campaign with a 91–65 victory over Argentina.

The Seven Consulting Opals have notched their first win of the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying campaign with a 91–65 victory over Argentina.

Isobel Borlase led the way with 19 points, while Ezi Magbegor dominated at both ends with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jade Melbourne also impressed with 12 points and three assists.

Magbegor said the Opals were pleased to start the tournament with a win but acknowledged there were areas the team could continue to build on.

“We knew Argentina were going to be a tough opponent, especially being the first game and with them fighting for a World Cup spot,” Magbegor said.

“We never take any team for granted and we wanted to start the tournament well. It was good to get the win, but we can look back on this game and work on a few things.

“This tournament is really important for us to build our chemistry and get better game by game.”

Head coach Sandy Brondello said the tournament provides valuable time for the group to continue building cohesion.

“It’s the first time this particular group has been together,” Brondello said.

“You saw some really good moments and some moments where we’re trying to experiment. That’s why we need these games as we move forward.

“We’ll be very intentional with what we do this week.”

The Opals will now turn their attention to Japan tomorrow night at 10:30pm AEDT as the tournament continues in Istanbul.
