Basketball Australia x AIS collaborate on parental guide for supporting athletes

Suite of resources created to support parents of athletes in basketball

It’s inevitable athletes in Basketball will be presented with challenges, and Basketball Australia alongside the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) acknowledge that parents and guardians are pivotal in supporting athletes in their wellbeing and performance.

A suite of resources designed by subject matter experts at the AIS with customisation for the sport of basketball has been developed to support the journey.

Rhian Bird, Head of Athlete Wellbeing at Basketball Australia, was consulted through the AIS’ resource build from experience working closely with parents across multiple sporting pathways, and with our Basketball Australia national teams.

"Parents or guardian of athletes take on many roles at various stages of their athletes’ growth and development, there is no guidebook, and it can be difficult to navigate. These resources are there to help provide clarity, to guide, and to empower parents to support their child. As well as to help coaches effectively work alongside parents.”

“These resources are a nod to just how much impact a parent can have on an athlete's performance, and wellbeing.”

With a range of topics aligned to common experiences within sport, the resources cover concepts such as managing school, understanding the sporting environment, managing injury and illness, bolstering resilience and fostering independence and more.

They include practical and clear strategies for parents and have benefit for parents of athletes of any age, or stage, of development.
