Basketball Australia launches new national Coach Development Framework

Bringing a clearer, more flexible and nationally consistent approach to support coaches at every stage of their journey.

Basketball Australia has launched its new national Coach Development Framework (CDF) – designed to provide flexible learning options and consistent support for coaches across the country.

Developed through extensive consultation with the basketball community and supported by the Game Development Levy, the Framework recognises that no two coaching journeys are the same – whether someone is coaching Ford Aussie Hoops, leading a local club team, or working at representative level.

A Framework built for real coaching journeys

Neil Gray, Community Capability and Education Manager at Basketball Australia, said the new Framework has been designed to better reflect coaching entry points and pathways:

“We're delighted to launch our new Coach Development Framework. It's an important development that recognises the vital role coaches play in our sport. This represents years of hard work and consultation to ensure coaches get the training and support they need. Because ultimately, investing in our coaches is investing in the future of basketball."

What's changed

The new Framework modernises how coaches learn and progress. Learning now combines online modules with face-to-face sessions, practical coaching experience and self-directed development.

A new points system recognises the learning coaches are already doing, while qualifications align with the diverse contexts in which coaches work across 5x5, 3x3, and adaptive and wheelchair basketball.

The Framework is designed to:

  • Make coach development easier to understand and navigate
  • Recognise that coaches learn and develop in different ways
  • Deliver a consistent experience across all States and Territories

New Qualification Management System (QMS)

To support the rollout of the Framework, Basketball Australia has also launched a new Qualification Management System (QMS) through etrainu.

The QMS will be the main place for coaches to:

  • Access learning and education resources
  • Track qualifications and accreditation progress
  • Clearly see where they sit within the coaching pathway

Existing qualifications have been carried across into the new system, ensuring a smooth transition for current coaches.

Coaches can now access the Coach Development Framework and QMS via etrainu, available through the Basketball Australia website.
