Basketball Australia unveils its new Strategic Plan

Basketball Australia releases new three-year Strategic Plan to elevate the game nationwide.

Australian basketball has never been stronger, and today Basketball Australia has unveiled its new Strategic Plan 2026–2028, setting a clear and coordinated pathway for the next phase of the sport’s growth.

In 2025, more Australians than ever before watched, played, officiated and celebrated basketball. This momentum reflects decades of dedication from volunteers, players, officials and administrators across every corner of the country – and provides a powerful foundation for the future.

As the sport looks toward LA28 and the home Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Australian basketball enters a new era of unity and long-term ambition, guided by the Australian Basketball 2040 Vision – Everybody’s Game.

The 2026–2028 Strategic Plan represents the first phase of delivering on that shared vision.

The plan translates long-term aspirations into clear priorities and coordinated action, strengthening collaboration between Basketball Australia and its State and Territory Associations, and ensuring the entire basketball community benefits from the opportunities ahead.

Basketball Australia CEO Matt Scriven said the plan reflects both pride in the sport’s progress and responsibility to its future.

“Basketball is deeply embedded in communities across Australia, and the passion for our game has never been stronger,” Scriven said.

“This Strategic Plan is about harnessing that momentum – improving the experience for every participant, protecting the safety and integrity of the game, and working together as one basketball community to elevate our sport nationally and internationally.”

Through to 2028, Basketball Australia will focus on delivering key initiatives against five identified Strategic Pillars:

  • Participation – Enhancing the experience of participants by making basketball safe, fun and accessible
  • People – Recognising, supporting and developing the people who make basketball thrive, and building capability across the community
  • Performing – Providing Australia’s basketballers and officials with opportunities to be their best on and off the court
  • Leading – Delivering best-practice governance and strengthening how the sport operates and engages with its members
  • Impact – Celebrating, promoting and growing basketball’s influence and connection with Australian culture.

Basketball Australia Chair John Carey said collaboration across the whole of sport ecosystem would be central to achieving the plan’s ambition.

“Much more is possible when we work together,” Carey said.

“We are honoured to lead Australian basketball through the next phase of its development, and we share the excitement and optimism of the entire basketball community for what lies ahead.”

With participation demand at an all-time high and waitlists growing in many regions, the plan prioritises improving participation opportunities and experiences, while laying the groundwork for a long-term national facilities strategy to provide more places to play.

Basketball Australia will continue its core responsibilities as the national governing body, including leading national teams, delivering high-performance pathways, overseeing national championships, fostering game development, and upholding integrity and safe sport standards across the game.
