Ability Hoops is Basketball Australia’s inclusive participation program, designed to provide children aged 8–12 with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder the opportunity to learn and enjoy basketball in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.
Built on the belief that everyone should have access to sport, regardless of ability, Ability Hoops introduces participants to the fundamental skills of basketball, including dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork, through fun, modified activities tailored to individual needs. Sessions are delivered in small groups, supported by trained coaches and volunteers, creating an encouraging environment where players can progress at their own pace.
In 2025, Ability Hoops engaged 275 participants across 13 centres, with 43 programs delivered nationwide. Coach education remained central to the program’s delivery, with 237 coaches completing the Ability Hoops Coaches Course, ensuring sessions were led by people equipped to support participants effectively.
Western Australia recorded the highest number of participants, reflecting the strong community support for inclusive basketball opportunities in the state.
Ability Hoops aligns with Basketball Australia’s broader participation vision of ‘Everybody’s Game’, with each session designed not only to build basketball skills, but also to promote social interaction, confidence, communication and physical activity.
Basketball Australia thanks the centres, coaches, volunteers and families who continue to champion Ability Hoops, helping ensure basketball remains a sport where everyone has the opportunity to belong, participate and thrive.
