The Australian Wombats (women) have rounded out a strong campaign for Australia’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball program, defeating India in a best-of-three series in Bangkok to secure the Oceania qualification spot for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Victoria Simpson, Georgia Munro-Cook, Ebony Stevenson and Taishar Ovens wasted no time as they overpowered India 16-1 in the opener and 20–1 in the second to close out the series.
For Head Coach Rob Pike, the focus in Bangkok was on setting the tone, building pressure and dictating the tempo.
“The aim was defensive pressure and intensity,” Pike said.
“We wanted deflections, steals, and shot clock violations — and that’s what we got. The girls worked hard. The goal was two wins, and that’s what we achieved.”
The women’s success follows the men’s Wombats, who also secured the men’s Oceania qualification spot in Bangkok on Tuesday.
Pike said the results reflect the progress being made across Australia’s 3x3 pathway and the enthusiasm of players embracing the format.
“The 3x3 program in Australia is in a really good position. This year the program has won a bronze medal and qualified for the Commonwealth Games. The players love this version of basketball, and we are improving every time we play.”
With the 3x3 series complete, attention now turns to the 5x5 game as the Wombats remain in Bangkok for the Asia Oceania Zone Championships.
“We are excited for the opportunity to play against the best teams in our region. We are focused and ready to play some good quality, intense basketball.”
