Seven Consulting Opals coach Sandy Brondello and star forward / centre Ezi Magbegor will join bronze medal captain Tess Madgen for a free She Hoops Clinic on the Gold Coast on Sunday, 30 November.
The clinic is proudly supported by Experience Gold Coast and will welcome 150 girls between the ages of 6 – 16 to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience guided by their Opals favourites.
Basketball Australia will also use the moment to officially kick start the FIBA Women’s World Cup campaign for the Australian Opals with the tournament hosted in Germany from 4 – 13 September.
“It’s always special to be part of She Hoops and to help inspire the next generation of players,” said Sandy Brondello, Opals & Toronto - Head Coach.
“These camps are about more than basketball, they’re about confidence, leadership, and connection. Seeing young girls fall in love with the game and realise what’s possible is what it’s all about.”
Brondello’s message captures the heart of the Opals’ culture. Ranked number two in the world, the Opals are one of Australia’s most decorated national sporting programs and continue to represent excellence, resilience, and unity on the global stage.
Their visit to the Gold Coast extends that legacy, strengthening pathways between elite and grassroots basketball and reaffirming their commitment to growing the game across Australia.
“She Hoops exists to inspire, connect, and empower women and girls across all levels of basketball,” said Tess Madgen.
“When young girls see the Opals in their community, it shows them that this sport and these dreams belong to them too.”
Delivered by She Hoops, the clinic forms part of Basketball Australia’s commitment to celebrating women and girls in basketball through programs, leadership development, and storytelling that connect local communities with the elite level.
“This rare opportunity will see young girls train directly under a WNBA champion coach; an experience that simply doesn’t happen in Australian sport, let alone for free,” said Lauren Jackson AO OLY, GM of Women in Basketball and She Hoops founder.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to learn from global icons that, even while dominating on the world stage, continue to give back to the game. It reflects a culture deeply woven into the fabric of the Opals and women’s basketball in Australia, one built on connection, legacy, and lifting others as they rise.”
The free Gold Coast event comes as basketball continues to surge as Australia’s fastest-growing team sport, underscoring the importance of providing more opportunities for girls to play, connect and grow through the game
“We are excited to be hosting one of the largest She Hoops camps ever during Basketball Australia’s 2025 National Schools Championships right here on the Gold Coast,” said Mayor Tom Tate.
“To have Opals Head Coach Sandy Brondello and WNBA superstar Ezi Magbegor here training the next generation of girls highlights how strong Gold Coast basketball is. We can’t wait to see the impact of the camp and cheer on the Opals as they prepare for the Women’s World Cup in Germany in 2026.”
