Opals make a statement with back-to-back wins

Fast start in Shenzhen, Australia's strong start at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup.

The Seven Consulting Opals are sitting at the top of Group B with a 2–0 record, the reigning Oceanian champions are eyeing a deep run in the competition, and potentially a return to the top of the continental podium.

The Opals opened their Asia Cup campaign with a commanding victory over the Philippines, 115 - 39, showcasing their elite defensive structure and sharp ball movement.

The momentum carried into their second match, defeating Lebanon 113 - 34, where Australia again asserted their dominance in both ends of the floor.

Eight of the 11 players fielded finished in double figures, with Isabelle Bourne top-scoring with 15 points. Stephanie Reed and Abbey Ellis, meanwhile, produced 14 points apiece, with the former adding 7 assists to her tally.

Chloe Bibby notched another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, with Courtney Woods chalking up all-around numbers as she laced her 11 points with 6 rebounds and 7 assists plus a pair of steals.

Alex Fowler did practically the same as she tallied 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Sarah Bilcavs scored 11 as well while Miela Goodchild chipped in 10 points in the win that saw the crew shoot 17 three-pointers.

Overall, Australia shot 55.5-percent from the floor, a shooting night so good big thanks to how they ensured everybody gets touches as seen by the 39 assists they dished - the most in this year's Division A tilt.

With two convincing wins under their belt, the Opals have secured a spot at the top of Group B.

A blend of experienced internationals and rising stars has made the Opals one of the most well-rounded squads in the tournament. Among the top contributors:

  • Chloe Bibby has emerged as a two-way powerhouse, averaging 14 points and 11 rebounds per game, while leading the team in overall efficiency (23.0).
  • Abbey Ellis, the floor general, has orchestrated the offense with flair and precision, tallying 9 assists per game.
  • Alexandra Fowler has added grit and composure, averaging 5.5 assists and posting a solid 21.0 efficiency rating.
  • Miela Goodchild and Sara Blicavs have provided consistent scoring from the perimeter, combining for over 28 points per game.
  • Cayla George, a veteran presence, continues to dominate the glass with 10 rebounds per game.
