Gliders Set to Shine as the 2025 WNWBL Season Begins

The 2025 WNWBL is set to tip off with six teams, expanded 3x3 fixtures, and new clubs, boosting the Gliders’ pathway ahead of international competition.

The 2025 Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) season tips off this weekend, marking a new chapter for Australia’s women’s wheelchair basketball competition.

This year’s league sees a significant expansion from four to six teams, bringing increased opportunities for athletes across both the 5x5 and 3x3 formats and strengthening the Gliders’ pathway ahead of international competition later this year.

The 2025 season welcomes three important additions, with South Australia entering the league for the first time, Victoria making a long-awaited return through the newly launched Victoria Wonders, and Queensland re-establishing its presence under the Gold Coast Rollers.

3x3 will also feature in this year’s fixtures with the addition of two 3x3 games to be played in each round.  With wheelchair 3x3 basketball confirmed for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the additional format gives athletes the chance to develop in both formats.

The expanded league sets the stage for an exciting season, featuring current Australian Gliders, many of whom will be pushing for selection at the Asia Oceania Championships in Thailand this November, the qualifying event for the 2026 IWBF World Championships in Ottawa, as well as international stars like USA’s Rose Hollermann, who will be suiting up for the Sydney Uni Lions, and Japan’s Mari Amimoto, who makes her return to the league with the Sydney Blues.

“With the league kicking off, it’s a critical opportunity for our athletes to get high-quality, meaningful minutes in both 5x5 and 3x3 formats,” said Craig Campbell, Head Coach of the Australian Gliders.

“In a qualification year, every game matters. This domestic season plays a vital role in ensuring our Gliders are sharp, match-fit, and ready to perform on the international stage at the Asia Oceania Zone Championships in Thailand this November.”
