Inaugural Parliamentary Friends v Press Gallery Cup

Yesterday morning Parliament House played host to an array of sports to showcase the various sports that our Australian athletes will be participating in at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games later this year.

Over 50 members of Parliament and Press converged at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday for the inaugural Parliamentary Friends v Press Gallery Cup.

Hosted by the Australian Olympic Committee and Paralympics Australia, the event aims to spotlight the various sports that our Australian athletes will be shining in later this year as we gear up for Paris 2024.

Representing a diverse array of sports, the event featured basketball, wheelchair basketball, tennis, rowing, athletics, golf, and hockey.

Centre of Excellence student-athletes Sarah Portlock and Sophie Taylor swapped out their basketball jerseys for their coaches hats as each of their teams went head to head, with the Press Gallery coming out on top, defeating the Politicians 29-23.

In addition, Australian Rollers' Jontee Brown and Canberra Chargers coach Rohan Foy delivered a 'Come and Try' session, with all 15 wheelchairs clocking some impressive mileage.

"I think it's a great opportunity to have everyone come together to showcase our incredible sports and athletes at Parliament House. It's always exciting to introduce new people to wheelchair basketball, especially those who haven't watched our sport before.

"It was good to see the interest from many different sectors of the government and all their support towards having a go at all that was offered," said Brown.

Basketball Australia would like to thank the Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia and Basketball ACT.
