The Australian team will comprise of current or recent graduates from Basketball Australia’s globally renowned Centre of Excellence (CoE) program and the NBA Global Academy, both programs based at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Celebrating it’s 40th anniversity this year, the CoE has been the breeding ground for Australian national teams for the past four decades, and these twelve athletes are the latest to make their debut for the senior national team. Four members of the roster have recently been playing in the NBA G League or College basketball (USA); Taran Armstrong (California Baptist University), Hunter Clarke (University of Montana), Hunter Goodrick (University of South Dakota) and Matt Kenyon (South Bay Lakers, NBA G League). Representatives of the world-leading NBA Global Academy who have been selected are Tyrese Proctor and Alex Toohey, with Dyson Daniels, Jack McWilliams, Patrick Ryan, David Okwera, Reyne Smith and Harry Wessels all current CoE scholarship holders. The coaching staff of head coach Adam Caporn (CoE Men’s Head Coach/Tokyo 2020 Men’s Olympic Team Assistant Coach) and assistant coach Kerry Williams (Cairns Taipans Indigenous Programs Manager and NBL1 Head Coach) will have the additional support and mentorship of Gordon (Gordie) McLeod, who brings Olympic expertise having been an assistant coach for the Australian men’s team at Beijing. Upon selecting this Australian team, head coach Adam Caporn said: “What a fantastic opportunity and privilege for this group of highly talented young men to step forward and represent Australia in such an important game. “It is the greatest honour in sport to represent your country and knowing the talent and character of this group, they are ready to make an important contribution and do Australia proud. The top two teams in each group contesting the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers group phase will secure their spot to the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup scheduled for August.
