Young guns taking over the NBL1 for the Centre of Excellence

Round five and six of the NBL1 East is complete with The Centre of Excellence claiming comprehensive victories across the board.

The CoE NBL1 women's team have continued their hot streak taking it to seven-straight wins, as both the CoE women’s and men’s teams defeated Albury-Wodonga Bandits, Hornsby Ku-ring-Gai Spiders, Hills Hornets and the Inner West Bulls in round five and six.

Sitaya Fagan has starred for the CoE women in the past four games with stat lines of 27 points, 13 rebounds against the Bandits, 18 points, 12 rebounds against the Spiders, 30 points, 10 rebounds against the Hornets and 17 points, 8 rebounds against the Bulls. Accompanying Fagan on this stretch has been Isabel Smith with back-to-back 20 plus point games to close out round six.

The men’s CoE team is gaining momentum as they continue their jump towards the top of the table.

Luke Fennell has taken major strides as a leader of this team with notable contributions in the past four games, highlighted by a 24-point performance against the Bandits in round five. Whilst Sebastien Emenalo had a breakout performance in round six with 22 points, knocking down 6/11 threes in the victory over the Bulls.

CoE1 Women | Recap

The CoE women currently sit third on the NBL1 East standings through the first 8 games with a record of 7-1 as they ride a major wave of momentum.

The CoE began round five with a 10-point win over Albury-Wodonga Bandits 72-82 as Sitaya Fagan led the game with 27 points. Backing up the opening win in round five, the CoE overcame Hornsby Ku-ring-Gai 95-77 with numerous contributors getting to double digits for the CoE.

In round six, the CoE blew out the Hills Hornets 90-48 as Sitaya Fagan turned heads with a 30-point, 10 rebound performance. The CoE backed it up in a tighter matchup with the Inner West Bulls 77-83, holding on to a six point victory. Sitaya Fagan and Isabel Smith served to be a dominant duo for the CoE across the weekend, featuring heavily in both matchups leading the CoE to a seven-game winning streak.

Sitaya Fagan has had a major influence for the CoE this season, leading the team in points, rebounds and blocks with averages of 22.25 PPG, 9.50 RPG and 1.38 BPG. Emilija Dakic has spread the floor fluently, leading the CoE in assists with 5.0 APG.

CoE1 Men | Recap

Climbing to the top spot on the NBL1 East ladder, the CoE men have excelled through the opening eight games to boast a record of 7-1.

A 41-point victory over the Albury-Wodonga Bandits 66-107 continued a run of form for the CoE as they began round five. Luke Fennell caught fire with a 24-point, 3 assist, 3 rebound and 4 steal outing, whilst Che Brogan added 22 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Following the comprehensive victory, the CoE were involved in a back-and-forth three-point victory over Hornsby Ku-ring-Gai 79-76. The CoE stunned the Spiders with every player getting involved on the scoresheet, led by Roor Akhuar’s 17-point showing.

The CoE men began round six by defeating the Hills Hornets 58-68 in an ultimate team display with 10 of 12 players providing a score on the offensive end. In the men’s second game of the round, Sebastien Emenalo scored at will to provide his breakout game of the season in the win over the Inner West Bulls 73-83.

Despite the absence of the team's leading scorer Jacob Furphy due to his call-up for international duties, other leaders such as stand-in captain Luke Fennel and dominant power forward Ajak Nyuon lead from the front to guide the CoE towards back-to-back 10-point wins.

With eight games in the books, there have been a plethora of eye-catching performances. Jacob Furphy leads the team in scoring with 14 PPG, whilst Che Brogan leads the assist, and steals count with 4.14 APG and 2.14 SPG. Ajak Nyuon has been dominant on the glass averaging 5.86 rebounds per game as Ladji Coulibaly controls the paint with 1.67 blocks per game.
