Biography

Sami Whitcomb is of basketball’s great tales of making and taking your own way to the top.

Born in the US, Whitcomb attended high school in California then college at the University of Washington and went undrafted in 2010. It wasn’t until her European team went bust in 2013 that she came to Australia to play in the West Australian state league.

Her dominance for Rockingham eventually landed her an import spot with the Perth Lynx in 2015 and for the next three seasons she won selection in the WNBL All-Star team and quickly established herself as one of the league’s premier scorers and stars.

Seven years after being overlooked in the draft, Whitcomb had commanded the attention of WNBA clubs and was signed by Seattle Storm. The following season, she would win her first WNBA title in 2018.

In 2020, Whitcomb was part of second WNBA championship before moving to New York Liberty where she was coached by Opals head coach Sandy Brondello. She returned to the Storm in 2023 joining fellow Opals and Aussies Ezi Magbegor and Jade Melbourne on court.

Whitcomb has twice won medals at FIBA World Cups (silver, 2018 and bronze, 2022) and is set to become an Olympian at the Paris Games.
